Great workshop in Buckeystown

I got home yesterday afternoon from my workshop in Buckeystown Maryland.  A good time was had by all.  The workshop is held in a great location at The Bishop Claggett Center---nice classrooms, good food and a beautiful setting with a mountain view.

Here we are on the last day at the "Throw Down"---it was a beautiful day and a beautiful show of the student's work.

This is an old red barn on the property where the rug show was held---many beautiful rugs!
Mary Shepherd Burton's granddaughter was at the workshop and brought a couple of her rugs which were great to see.

This sculpture was in the front of the conference center---love it---does the pose look familiar?

Suzie was working on this Sunflower Witch pattern from Spruce Ridge.  The hair looked like chenille. Great job Suzie!

Billie was working on  "Comstock" a Lib Callaway pattern.  She is off to a good start---love this pattern---always fun to color plan---hope you are feeling better Billie.

Nancy started this pattern with Pris Butler---a family farm---Laurel Hill.  It was fun to help her put the finishing touches on the great memory piece.

Phyllis chose this Heaven's to Betsy floral to work on----soft primitive flowers and I love the basket.  It will have a dark blue basket---Phyllis gained a lot of confidence during the week and this is going to be a great rug!

Joanne chose this Barbara Carroll pattern called Rags---a great primitive rug!  the dog definitely has an attitude---it will have a dirty light background---great crow as well.

Nada was working on "Ipswich" and Edyth O'Neill design---a great floral.  check this one out up close to see the paisley in the rug.  The background is Nada's stripe---cut the direction the stripes run.

Phyllis chose one on my favorite patterns---Lib Callaway's Jumbo Star.  I have worked with this pattern many times and I always enjoy it.  This version will have a light inner background and dark outer background.  Great start!

Cheri chose "Gabby's Garden" a Searsport Rug pattern.  This is one BIG rug!

As you can see Cheri is not afraid of color and it was fun to work with her on this rug---below is a close-up of a couple of the flowers.

Barbara designed this pattern with Bees and Flowers---it was fun to work on---the bees wings are yet to be determined---most likely will be a fun yarn---can't wait to see what she comes up with---look closely at the black textures in the bees!

This one of Joanne's new designs---Woodcrest Designs---Poppies, Morning Glories and Buttercups.  this is a close-up showing what we came up with for the border---I really like it;  Below you can see the whole pattern and Joanne!

Joanne created another version of this pattern for Pat to hook for her granddaughter Darby---who asked for pinks and purples and a special border.  

It was fun to have this pattern being hooked in two totally different color plans.

Another big rug---Susi was working on Emma Lou's Tulip Cross with the border.  This rug was being hooked in a #6 cut  She is off to a great start.  Fun to have Susi in class---we go back to the early days on Padula.

Unfortunately I did not get pictures of Diana's Cape Ann---another Edyth O'Neill design.  I also got to help her with Naomi Hudson's star----another favorite of mine.  Both of these were rugs that I had hooked and were pictured in Early American Life magazine.

It is good to be home and I will be busy getting ready for two workshops in Nebraska---leaving a week from Monday!

                   Yesterday was my daughter's 4th wedding anniversary...Love you Chelsea and Noah.

Almost ready for Buckeystown

I am down to the wire---my final day before I fly to Baltimore.

 Chilly here this morning---went for my 3.1 mile run---two weeks until my next race---the KC Marathon---no long run for me this year---do plan to do the 5K and am hoping for my best time ever.  This was my very first race 5 years ago---my time was somewhere between 35 and 36 minutes...last year my time was 30:07---my goal this year is around 28 minutes because my neighbor Kelly is running with me again---she makes me a faster runner---she is 29 years old.

I broke down and turned the heat on---just enough to get rid of the chill.  Tomorrow morning it is supposed to be 29 degrees in the morning.  Brrrr!

Yesterday I went through my house and took pictures of most of my hooked pieces---or at least the ones I could round up---I thought it might be nice to have them in one spot on my computer so I can set up a slide show---I know that I didn't get them all---whole writing this I am thinking what happened to the framed Santa and where is the chicken rug,  hmmm!  I guess I'll have to go on a hunt!

Here are a few that I might not have ever posted.

This was my very first piece that I ever hooked---it was a kit from Hooked on Rugs that I purchased and hooked all on my own in 1994---it was truly the beginning of my hooking adventure.

This is a close up detail of "Oak Scrollings" a Jane Flynn design.  I hooked it in 2001.

This is an antique adaptation rug that I hooked in 1999---I think it was the first rug that I used antique paisley in---it resides in my bedroom in our trailer at the lake.

Well it is time to get some packing done.

Home from Green lake

Well I got home from Green Lake on Friday a 6:15 PM after a long days drive.  I woke up at 5 AM and decided to hit the road so that I could make it all the way home.  I had to make several stops to keep me from nodding off---one antique shop yielded a tea leaf dish and 3 celluloid hairbrushes that I thought would make good brushes for brushing off the snips off a rug on a hooking frame.  At another one I got two nice country baskets.  I picked up another book on tape in Madison and since I didn't get it finished I got to listen to more of it today on the way to the trailer at the lake---I know---CRAZY!  But we decided we wouldn't be able to get back down to winterize it since I am leaving Sunday for Maryland and then when I get home I will be getting ready for two workshops in Nebraska and then I will be going to South Central Teacher's workshop in Texas.

I spent Saturday and Sunday unpacking and repacking for Buckeystown Workshop---4 big boxed on their way via UPS this morning at 8 AM on our way to the lake.  It turned out to be a good day to leave because our street is being resurfaced and we had to be off the street from 7AM this morning until 6 PM tonight.

I actually got to spend some time hooking today on the way to the lake---I am doing another variation on a Grenfell mat for a class that I am teaching at Teacher's workshop---I wanted to do one with some yarn and with a small border so it will be easier to make it round---here is the start of it.  Did you know that some of the best Grenfell mats had 200 loops per square inch---now that is fine work!!!

We had a wonderful week at camp---the weather couldn't have been more perfect!  Green Lake is a great camp in a beautiful lake setting.

This was taken early one morning when I went on a bike ride.

I was very excited to see this rug hooked by Karen---she started it at a workshop that I taught several years ago with The Loopy ladies in Libertyville IL---what a great job she did!  It is an inch mat---I wonder how many inches there really are.

My poor husband went to pick up the jet skis that were bing fixed 1 1/2 hours away---he got back and the small jet ski wouldn't work---he was not happy to say the least and had to turn around and drive back---I guess he will need some pampering tonight---and a beer!

Hi ho--- Hi Ho! It's off to Green Lake I go

Well the time has come to take off for Green Lake Rug Camp---almost ready to hit the road.  I still need to load the tubs on the back of the Pathfinder.  We have a lot of ivy on our tree in the front and it is dripping sap all over so I decided to wait till morning to load the tubs and I plan to get the hose out to spray it off before I do---it is a mess.

Here is a picture of what was some beautiful orange wool.  I am very thankful that the smell woke me up---things could have been so much worse.  I have a new rule---I will never leave anything on the stove---at the end of the day all pots are emptied and put away---no exceptions!
The smoke smell is gone and all  is well.

I have been working on my project for South Central Teacher's workshop---the piece is finished but I still have to write my report.  Here is a sneak peak at my version of a Grenfell hooked in wool.  I did learn that it is very difficult to make it round when hooking in straight lines.

I bought this wonderful old sewing box on Ebay and I received it this week---it had my name on it.  Check this out.

One thing rug hookers like to do is eat---we have a ritual  with my hooker's from Greenwood that we eat lunch at the tearoom before class.

Scary morning

I woke up early this morning to the smell of smoke---went downstairs to find my basement filled with smoke and discovered that one of the pots of wool that I dyed yesterday was left on and the wool was smoldering in the pot.  I hardly ever leave a pot on the stove but it was the last pot and I knew that I was going to be dyeing again this morning so I left it on the stove to cool---ha!  Instead of the burner getting turned off it was turned to high.  The wool was crispy in the pot.  The smoke alarm didn't go off. I didn't wake my husband up and he never smelled  it.  I opened up the whole house and got the fans going and got rid of the smoke pretty quickly but am hoping the smell will go away---fortunately neither the heat or air conditioning was on so it didn't travel through the vents.  I have put out odor absorbers and am hoping that it will not have a long lasting effect.  The thought of having to wash all the wool in my basement is mind boggling.  I have been doing the sniff test and I think I am going to be okay.  I read to put our bread slices soaked in vinegar, I have used febreze and baking powder.  Fortunately there is no carpet in the basement---I plan to take my rugs outside today to give them a breath of fresh air.  This was not on my agenda today as I am busy getting ready for Green Lake Rug Camp and Buckeystown as well.

I ran a 10 K on Sunday and set a new Personal record, doing it in one hour and 42 seconds---I came in 5th in my age group as a lot of the fast runners were doing this one.  My neighbor Kelly who is 29 tan it with me and she keeps me going faster than I normally run so my legs are killer sore!

Chelsea and Noah's house is coming along well---here is a picture that she sent me of her kitchen.

Suzette Krummel- White Pine Folk Art Suzette Krummel has won the highest award as a traditional artisan in this year’s Directory of Traditional American Crafts and her penny rug work is showcased in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 issues of Early American Life magazine. She designs patterns, dyes wool and sells her finished pieces at folk life festivals and art shows. She has a great big piece of "wool heaven" in the lower level of her home in Quincy Illinois

Sheila Arbogast – Prairie Road Designs sell unique wool rug hooking patterns. Sheila has many years of experience in the creative arts. Her areas of expertise include punch needle, water color, cross stitch, embroidery and rug hooking. Her patterns are largely inspired by her home, Prairie Road Acres, in the Missouri countryside where she lives with her husband, Craig and English Setter, Patches (who appears in many of her designs.)
Sally Kallin-Pine Island Primitives After 20 years of being a graphic designer in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota her career changed direction when she and her family moved to the small town of Pine Island, Minnesota. She had been hooking for a few years and was flattered when people started purchasing her patterns even before she had them for sale. The first catalog was published in 2001 and the business has boomed since then.
Melvina Miller- Hollyhock Hills Designs is a true fan of all needle art and fiber art; was raised doing all these things and have chosen her favorite, rug hooking, to start a Cottage Business out of her home. Melvina is from Indiana.
Shawn Williams-Threads that Bind Shawn comes to us from Macon, MO. She offers punchneedle, wool appliqué, stitchery, and stuffed project patterns and supplies.
Melissa Towne – Primitive Stitches from Warrensburg, MO loves to quilt, stitch, rug hook, work with wool, punch needle, needle felting. She enjoys Primitives and anything antique or vintage! Especially Civil War or 1800's! She will be sharing her wool appliqué projects.
Beth Bellairs from Ewe and Eye has a primitive rug hooking shop located in rural northeast Iowa.
Ewe and Eye opened in September, 2004 in a double garage. They covered the walls with Beth's barn boards and filled antique cupboards and containers with woolens and such.
Anita White – Southern Comfort is a rug hooker and teaches rug hooking classes in her home as well as at camps and workshops around the country. She loves using lots of plaids, textures and antique paisley in her rugs and hook mostly in wide cut (#6-9). She received her McGown certification in 2001. Anita comes from Overland Park, KS.
Renee Nanneman - Need’l Love Renee is the editor of the Need’l Love books we all love so much. Her books have a mix of wool appliqué, penny rugs, fabric wall hangings, dolls, quilt designs, rug hooking , punch needle, crochet , and needle felting.
Patty Wallace—Saltbox Primitive Woolens Located in Warsaw her shop has a large selection of wool and rug hooking supplies. Wool is dyed right on the premises and there are rug hooking classes year round. There is a quilting room in back with quilting material and supplies, and a full supply of DMC floss.

I've been in the dye pots all week getting ready for the hook-in and for my upcoming classes in Green Lake,Wisconsin, Buckeystown, Maryland and also in Nebraska...a busy fall which I finish up with South Central McGown Teacher's workshop the first week in November.  Yikes!!!

What a messy pile of beautiful wool---I should be working downstairs getting this organized!  That is where I am headed as soon as I get through writing this.

We have gotten lots of rain yesterday and today---I think about 5 inches---we really needed it but does it have to come all at once.  Hope everyone in Louisiana and other areas affected by Isaac are doing well.


I have a date tonite---a dinner date with my husband---I plan to dress up and even put make-up on--woo hoo!!!  We are going to Bonefish for dinner---yummy!
